Here’s some info about MAiDHouse and their mission to provide a compassionate choice for Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD)…
Based in a temporary location in Toronto, MAiDHouse operates as a “non-profit organization devoted to providing a supportive, inclusive and home-like setting for medical assistance in dying.”1
Their highly-trained team of doctors, nurses, ethicists, advocates and volunteers are dedicated to assisting and providing relief to “anyone who needs a safe, reliable, and comfortable home-like setting to access MAiD,” while “putting their needs first.”2
One of MAiDHouse’s biggest struggles, however, has been its inability to find a permanent location in the Greater Toronto Area. This is mainly because “landlords have been reluctant to take MAiDHouse on as a tenant for fear of the location becoming a focus of negative attention by those opposed to MAiD,”3 according to board chair Dr. Chantal Perrot.
Currently, MAiDHouse does not receive any government funds, but they hope that one day they will have the ability to help those in need by eventually purchasing a number of suitable spaces across Canada.
MAiD House – How they help
Ever since its establishment in 2018, MAiDHouse has been fighting to “raise awareness, dispel misconceptions and reduce stigma about MAiD.”4
Knowing that one-third of people in need of MAiD are unable to find a suitable place for their final resting moments, MAiDHouse strives to “create a home-like setting where those who are eligible” and wish to go through the procedure “can experience the death of their choosing.”5
Regarding MAiDHouse’s current situation…
In a recent interview, MAiDHouse executive director Tekla Hendrickson, said: “We have done everything we can to shake the tree, as we call it, to find a space, so if there’s anyone out there interested in supporting an organization like MAiDHouse and has a space they think is accessible, we’d love to speak to them.
Can you imagine being told you have a terminal illness or you’re going to die and then you choose MAiD and you still don’t have a place?”6
Vickie Micallef, the wife of a man who chose MAiD after he succumbed to Huntington’s disease said: “If there’s no place to do it, then you have to go to the end of a terrible, terrible death.”7

Giving Generously 2021 – Our Social Responsibility Campaign
People helping people is how we deliver better business insurance. ALIGNED is known for consistently delivering a better insurance experience to Canadian businesses. Each and every day, we do this by:
- Being fiercely independent – our brokerage is 100% owned by us, not by any insurance company
- Doing what we say we’re going to do when we say we’re going to do it
- Fulfilling our social responsibility to help others
Since 2014, we’ve donated to more than 40 Canadian charities through our social responsibility initiatives. We know it’s a privilege to handle our clients’ insurance needs and that’s why GIVING frequently, consistently and GENEROUSLY is essential to all of us.
Each year, a portion of ALIGNED Insurance profits are donated to a Canadian charity that is nominated by an ALIGNED client. During the Giving Generously campaign, people vote by visiting web pages that ALIGNED builds to celebrate each charity and the great work they do.
Our annual Giving Generously donation is made to the registered Canadian charity that receives the most “votes” which are recorded as web page sessions.
