Since 1985, Second Harvest has made a name for itself thanks to the inspired work of two Toronto, Ontario women.
“Ina Andre and Joan Clayton, saw that good food was being thrown away while people were going hungry right here in Toronto. This contradiction didn’t sit well with them so they decided to do something about it.
Ina and Joan started driving around the city in their hatchbacks asking restaurants and grocery stores to donate their excess, fresh food so they could take it to hungry people, instead of throwing it in the garbage. The restaurateurs and retailers agreed and Second Harvest was born.”1
Second Harvest – How They Help
On their website, Second Harvest explains how one harvest has grown to so many, “With a vision that no one need ever go hungry in the communities we serve, the original intention of Second Harvest was the ultimate demise of the organization. Our founders hoped the future would not include the need for food rescue and hunger relief.
Unfortunately, 30 years later the need for food has only grown and Second Harvest now provides a critical service to thousands of people every day in Toronto. Since 1985 we have rescued and delivered more than 100 million pounds of food and prevented over 50 million pounds of greenhouse gas equivalents from entering our atmosphere.”2
