ALIGNED Insurance believes that it is a privilege to handle our clients insurance needs and that it is our corporate and social responsibility to give generously and regularly to support the great work charitable and not profits organizations do every day across Canada.
As part of our commitment to give regularly, every month an ALIGNED Advocate selects a Canadian charity of their choice and ALIGNED makes a donation to that organization on their behalf. In recognition of the great work they do Mani Sharma has selected Doctors Without Borders for the month of June.
What is Doctors Without Borders?
Doctors Without Borders is a humanitarian aid, non-governmental, noble peace prize winner best known for its projects in war torn regions and developing countries fighting epidemic diseases. For more than 40 years Doctors Without Borders have been providing medical aid to people caught in catastrophes including; armed conflicts, natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, as well as epidemics of disease and malnutrition. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontiers was established in 1971 by a small group of French doctors who had worked together during the Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Biafran War.
“Our mandate concerns emergency relief, and the principles we honor while carrying out our work contained in the MSF Charter. We launch our operations in areas where there is no medical infrastructure or where the existing one cannot withstand the pressure to which it is subjected.”
In war zones Doctors Without Border provide medical care based on needs alone and they work hard to reach the people that need it most. Natural disasters such as an earthquakes, hurricanes or tsunamis, can overwhelm an entire population. Thousands of people can be injured or traumatized by the loss of family, friends and homes. Doctors Without Borders network of aid workers and supply of warehouses around the world allow for quick action and response to disastrous events.
Members of Doctors Without Borders agree to the following principles:
- Doctors Without Borders (MSF) provides assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or manmade disasters and to victims of armed conflict. They do so irrespective of race, religion, creed or political convictions.
- Doctors Without Border (MSF) observes neutrality and impartiality in the name of universal medical ethics and the right to humanitarian assistance and claims full and unhindered freedom in the exercise of its functions.
- Members undertake to respect their professional code of ethics and maintain complete independence from all political, economic or religious powers.
- As volunteers, members understand the risks and dangers of the missions they carry out and make no claim for themselves or their assigns for any form of compensation other than that which the association might be able to afford them.
